Thigh Stretch: Technique, Muscles Worked and Modifications

The Thigh Stretch on the Reformer is an intermediate Pilates exercise that focuses on a kneeling hinge back from your knees with straight hips. Also called the thigh stretch pilates movement, it challenges you to maintain a steady neutral spine while leaning backward.

This movement trains your rectus abdominis to hold your torso stable while actively lengthening your quadriceps. Your latissimus dorsi also acts as a supporting muscle to help control the movement as you hold the straps.

How to do the Thigh Stretch

Kneel on the Reformer carriage facing the pulleys with your knees against the shoulder rests and hold the straps in your hands.

  1. Keep your arms straight by your sides or slightly forward with a light grip on the straps.
  2. Engage your abdominal muscles to establish a neutral spine.
  3. Hinge backward from your knees while keeping your hips completely straight.
  4. Maintain a straight line from your knees up to the top of your head as you lean back.
  5. Pause briefly at the point where you feel a stretch in the front of your thighs.
  6. Use your abdominal muscles and the fronts of your thighs to pull your body back to the upright starting position.
  • Breath. Teachers cue breathing differently, but you will often inhale as you hinge backward and exhale as you return to the starting position.
  • Where you feel it. You should feel a lengthening stretch in your quadriceps and strong work in your abdominal muscles. You should not feel pinching or pressure in your lower back or your knees.
  • How many. 4 to 6 slow repetitions

Common mistakes

  • Arching the lower back. Keep your rectus abdominis engaged to hold a neutral spine steady. Do not let your ribs pop forward as you lean back.
  • Bending at the hips. Ensure the hinge happens only at your knees. Your hips should remain fully open and straight throughout the entire movement.
  • Pulling with the arms. Let your latissimus dorsi support your arm position without actively pulling the straps. The straps are there for balance and control rather than pulling.
  • Dropping the chin. Keep your head in line with your spine as you move. Look straight ahead instead of tucking your chin to your chest.

Make it easier or harder

Easier

  • Perform the hinge movement on the mat without the Reformer straps to practice the form.
  • Limit your range of motion by only leaning back a few inches.

Harder

  • Hinge further back to increase the lengthening demand on your quadriceps.
  • Hold the backward hinge for a few extra seconds before returning upright.

Who should be careful

  • Kneeling can be uncomfortable with knee pain; use extra padding or choose a version that keeps you off the knees.
  • Reformer springs and the moving carriage add load and instability. Learn it with a qualified instructor, who can set the springs for your body and goals.

How we put this page together. Exercise data (type, level, equipment and muscles) was compiled by our editors from the classical mat order in Joseph Pilates’ 1945 book and from commonly taught reformer repertoire.
