Check before you start

Talk to a doctor, physical therapist or other qualified clinician before starting or changing an exercise program, especially if you:

  • have back or neck pain, a recent injury, or have had surgery;
  • are pregnant or have recently given birth;
  • have osteoporosis or low bone density, a heart or lung condition, high blood pressure, or another long-term health condition;
  • are taking medication that affects balance, blood pressure or heart rate.

Stop and seek help

Stop exercising and seek medical advice if you feel chest pain, severe shortness of breath, dizziness or faintness, or pain that is sharp, spreading or getting worse. Numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs or arms, or new problems with bladder or bowel control, need prompt medical attention. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

No professional relationship

Reading this site, or writing to us, does not create a doctor, therapist or instructor relationship. We cannot answer personal medical questions.

Exercise involves some risk

Every form of exercise carries some risk of injury. Move within a range that feels comfortable, use the easier options described in our articles, and choose a qualified instructor if you are new to Pilates. You are responsible for decisions you make about your own health.

Accuracy

We work to keep articles accurate and up to date, as described in our editorial policy, but health guidance changes and we cannot guarantee that every page reflects the latest evidence.
